Passion, dedication, and love for the game.
From humble beginnings to a thriving football community, our story is built on the passion and commitment of the dedicated individuals behind the NMIFA.
In 2005, the NMIFA was established as a non-profit organization to serve as the sole officiating organizer of soccer in the CNMI. Starting with over 250 registrations in its first season catered for youth players, the NMIFA quickly expanded and began its women's and men's leagues. By 2007, NMIFA became an Associate Member of the EAFF.
In 2008, the NMIFA received full membership to the EAFF, and continued to widen its reach by starting an Interscholastic League for elementary students. Local referees and coaches were regularly trained to raise the technical skills in the program. Every year, NMIFA sent teams to international EAFF sanctioned competitions. In 2009, the NMIFA became an AFC Associate Member.
In 2011, the Boys U15 National Team won the CNMI's first national team victory in an international competition at the EAFF U15 Youth Tournament against Macau. The NMIFA's teams continued to hone their skills and participated in multiple AFC and EAFF events. In 2013, the Boys U14 claimed the CNMI's first AFC win. In 2014, the NMI Men's and Women's National Teams recorded double victories against Macau in the EAFF East Asian Cup Preliminary Round.
Despite the damages and challenges brought by Super Typhoon Soudelor in 2015 and Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018, the NMIFA players and officials persevered and continued to train in pitches at parks, schools, and even the airport field. They continued to gain international exposure by competing in numerous AFC and EAFF events.
In 2018, the NMI Soccer Training Center opened its doors to the community, offering two pitches, spectator seating, evening access, and offices and training rooms. In 2022, an additional full-sized pitch was added to the state-of-the-art facility, and is now used by over 200 individuals daily and hosts over 2,000 spectators during competitions and special events.
After years of active participation as an Associate Member, the NMIFA was admitted into the AFC as an Ordinary Member in 2020. The NMIFA continues to work closely with the AFC to develop soccer and involve new segments of players in the CNMI.
Since 2005, NMIFA's total registered players have consistently grown. Today, there over 900 registered male and female players ranging from youth to veterans – making soccer the largest organized sport in the CNMI.
